Damayanti Sen Chollen A Song For Damayanti Sen

"Like many others I, too, followed newspaper reports on Damayanti Sen, IPS. When the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sm Mamata Banerjee called the Park Street rape incident a fabricated story which was aimed at tarnishing her government's image, Sm Damayanti Sen, IPS, Joint Commissioner Police (Crime) struck a different note. She said it was indeed a rape and with her team she chased the crime. Arrests were made. People at once started praising her. Sm Mamata Banerjee's government was embarrassed. There was a time when Mamata, the Great Opposition Leader, always ran to any woman who might have suffered any assault and she always stood by the victim. But now it was a different Mamata. Gone was her past disposition. I, for one, felt pain. And then I heard a member of Mamata's cabinet go to the extent of saying that the victim was in some escort service, as though that justified the rape. It was anger that I felt. I felt awkward because once I had been with these people in our collective struggle against the CPI(M)-led Left Front government. A few days later, Sm Damayanti Sen, IPS, was reported by the media to have held a press conference at the Writers' Building where she said that she always worked with a team and therefore, she alone shouldn't be selectively praised for what she had done as a part of her duty. I wish the new government hadn't gone to this extent. But the fact that it did was a sad commentary on the ethical stance of the "poriborton" government that millions of people had been looking up to following the long misrule of the Left Front government. Recently, we came to know that Sm Damayanti Sen has been transferred to another post. Informed people had foreseen such an outcome right after Sm Sen came out with her own statement on the Park Street incident. It's probable that the "senile degeneration" that some doctors say I am afflicted with prompted me to think that a police officer who has shown such professional excellence and independence of mind, a quality that is becoming progressively rare in our country should have been encouraged to continue in the crime department especially at a time when crime is known to be increasing in our city and in our state in general. I wanted to write a song for Sm Damayanti Sen. I started to write the words on 8 April, 2012, and finished the song and recorded it on a portable digital recorder on 9 April, 2012. I used only the little stereo mic that came with the recorder. And I used my old nylon string guitar. The guitar was not amplified. Later, I touched up the stereo track on Adobe 3 just a little."
